Getting started

Choosing a location, or describing your own

Twelve rooms, and the difference between them is the whole look of the set.

  1. 01

Start from the garment, not the room

Occasion wear wants the festive interior, which is warm and richly lit at dusk. Everyday western wear wants the clean studio or the gallery. A heavy ethnic piece in a bright modern studio reads as a costume.

  2. 02

Use the clean studio for marketplaces

Marketplace crops want a plain ground. Generating in the clean studio and cropping from that is fewer steps than fixing a courtyard afterwards.

  3. 03

Use flat lay and macro for the detail

Those two styles have no room in them. They photograph the cloth itself, which is what a shopper zooms in for.

  4. 04

    Or write your own room

Describe it in a sentence and it is used instead of the presets. Concrete beats atmospheric: a whitewashed room with a jute rug and afternoon light from the left works, moody and aspirational does not.

  5. 05

Then hold it for the batch

The location is set per batch. Changing it between pieces is what makes a collection look like several collections.
